What is a Fixed Mindset?
In this post I’m going to walk you through 4 points:
- What is a fixed mindset?
- How a fixed mindset can affect you?
- What are the characteristics of a fixed mindset
- How to develop a fixed mindset into a growth mindset.
Are you ready for it?
Awesome, let’s go!
So as we all know, in order to grow anything, you first have to prepare the “soil” in which you will be planting your seeds.
Proper preparation requires knowledge gained from both trials and triumphs of the past.
Taking the seed as an example: you need to weed out anything that you don’t want to cohabit or disturb your seed to grow. This also requires enriching the soil for best seed growth. Also, it is important to look for the best time of the year to plant the seed…
The best lessons we can get from life are through trials and difficulties.
But what if we go through trials and difficulties, but haven’t learned anything? What will happen to our mindsets then?
Here, I introduce you to fixed mindsets…
So, what is a fixed mindset?
Often times we hear that we should let go of our “fixed mindset” and open up to growth instead.
Usually many people will pay little attention to this advice. They prefer to continue their daily lives with the wrong mentality. Unfortunately, this mindset doesn’t benefit in the long run.
Tophat.com describes what a fixed mindset is as follows:
A fixed mindset, proposed by Stanford professor Carol Dweck in her book Mindset, describes people who see their qualities as fixed traits that cannot change. With a fixed mindset, talent is enough to lead to success and effort to improve these talents isn’t required: one is born with a certain amount of skill and intelligence that can’t be improved upon.
To put it simply, someone with a fixed mindset is someone who displays a lot of dark/ depressing attitudes. They feel as though nothing they do is permanent. And no matter how much they try, their built-up skill will never be enough to match people with talent.
People with a fixed mindset most of the times have low self-esteem and are maybe unconfident in their skills and abilities. Thus, they put themselves in a box and believe that everything they do is destined to fail…
Have you experienced someone like this throughout your life?
Now, how can this type of mindset affect oneself?
We have power in our tongues. What we declare or what we speak upon our lives, will be exactly what will display throughout our lives.
A person with a fixed mindset is not necessarily depressed but is someone who doesn’t feel that their talents or gifts can change or develop.
Because of this mindset, they will remain in a status quo state without going back or forward.
One the ways that this mindset affects us is that:
We will never see possibilities when the doors are actually wide open before us. Because we are constantly thinking “It’s not for me” or “I won’t succeed anyway.”
On the other hand,
People with a fixed mindset can achieve success because of their talents and abilities. But many times this will not endure in the long term because of their bad habits of not being willing to grow or evolve.
We have to be careful of this mentality, because you don’t want to find yourself living a hopeless life…
Picture it as this:
Because of my natural talents I’ve managed to grow a successful business in no time. Now imagine time continues to go by and I’m not willing to evolve and grow with technology. I decide that the same analog way that I’ve achieved success. What will happen to my business in the long term?
Exactly! My business will go down and crash.
That is what will happen with us in every area of our lives if we don’t want to grow or move forward with the open mind of possibilities.
You don’t want that for your life!
Now, let's look at the characteristics of a fixed mindset!
According to Carol Dweck here are 5 characteristics of fixed mindsets:
√ Avoiding challenges
√ Giving up easily
√ Seeing efforts as fruitless or worse
√ Ignoring useful, negative feedback
√ Feeling threatened by the success of others
Your view of yourself can determine everything. If you believe that your qualities are unchangeable, in other words, a fixed mindset, then you will want to prove yourself correct over and over rather than learning from your mistakes.
If you’ve noticed any of these characteristics in your behavior, then it is important to learn to grow from it.
You are destined for greatness. The wrong mentality will hold you back from achieving greatness though. Developing a growth mindset will help you to achieve success and maintain it for a long period of time. With other words, our mindsets can determine our future if we grow or remain in the exact position.
If you want to become the best version of yourself, then work hard! Work hard and never settle for what you currently possess.
How can we grow from a fixed mindset to a growth mindset?
A person with a growth mindset leads to a desire to grow.
Like I stated at the beginning of this post we will all face difficulties when we are on the road to success. Trials and difficulties are our best teachers because they will teach us how to grow.
But we need to tackle trials and difficulties with the right mindset. We have to fix our perspectives to see something new to learn in everything that we go through.
In order to grow and become successful, we have to persist in the face of setbacks.
Setbacks are just like a parent who wants to teach his son a lesson. The parent tests his son by giving him two options to choose from…
- Give up and quit or
- Persist until you see the light at the end of the tunnel.
With the right mindset, you can persist through every setback.
How do we do this? By shifting our minds to view our challenges as opportunities to learn and be the best we can be.
The problem with us humans is that we never want to see the big picture… but it is the big picture that gives us hope and strength to keep going because our hard work will eventually pay off.
Next, it’s important to find lessons in the success of others.
One of the best ways to develop a growth mindset is to find inspiration in the success of others.
You wanna know why?
Because it will push you to believe that: If that person can do it, so can you and even BETTER!
We need to have the right mindset to find the best tactics to push through all our limitations. So, to grow from a fixed mindset to a growth mindset means changing your way of thinking and your world view. Be the world that you would like to see.
Whether your goal is personal or professional growth, familiarize yourself with your surroundings. Be an observant, a listener, and a participant.
Walk with a mindset that there’s always something new to learn. There are different areas in our lives that we need to constantly improve.
Ask God for wisdom today. His wisdom, knowledge, and understanding that surpasses all worldly knowledge. Honestly, it is the ultimate wisdom that we need!
Conclusion: What is a fixed mindset?
A fixed mindset is the mindset that you do not want for your life. You want to be able to grow and learn from every situation in order to reach your full potential.
The road to success is full of trials and hardships, look at each and every one of these as a stepping stone to push you to reach higher and higher.
Lastly, I want you to answer these questions for yourself:
What makes you unique?
Can you work alone or only with others?
Who are you marketing yourself to?
How will you let others know about your personal growth?
The fixed mindset will lead to disaster, meanwhile the growth mindset will lead you to the ultimate success.
