One of the best life skills you can ever learn is how to deal with people. You spend most of your days around human beings, and it is important to learn how to charm, win, and influence people. Whether it is your colleagues, your friends, business partners, your children, and so on.
But how do you make people like you? How do you become the sort of person that everyone wants to talk to? I am not perfect, but I want to share with you a method that will help you win and influence people. And that is the ‘Fishing Method’.
The Art of Fishing...
There are in total 5 basic methods of fishing. Today we are going to focus on one, and that’s the ‘fish bait’ method. Fishing bait basically means you attach a substance to your hook to attract the fish by giving it what it wants and as a result, you catch it.
How to Apply The 'Fishing Bait' Method To Our Lives?
There’s only one way to get anybody to do anything. And that is by making the other person want to do it. In other words, the only way I can get you to do anything is by giving you what you want.
Do you see the similarity with fishing? You can’t expect to throw the line in the water and think that the fish will hook itself, just because you want it to, you have to give it what it wants.
Now, of course, you can threaten someone into giving you whatever it is that you want by using fear and manipulation. But this method will give you an undesirable consequence, and the results will not be long-term.
So, let’s put this into practice…
The deepest urge in human nature according to John Dewey, an American philosopher is the desire to be important. In other words, no one is interested in you. They don’t want to know about you. They are not bothered about where you are going on vacation. All they care is about themselves.
People want to feel appreciated and validated. If you want to influence someone and all you’re doing is talking about yourself, and the things you desire, you are easily going to lose this person. So, it is important to consider what does this person want? Just like fishing bait, if you can give the person what he/she wants, you will definitely win them over.
Use The Right Bait For Your Fish...
If you are familiar with fishing, then you probably know that there are many substances that people use to bait a fish. I once read that people use soap for a fishing bait. That sounds crazy to me. But it opens my eyes to an important thing, and that is to use the correct fishing bait otherwise you are wasting your time.
To illustrate, let’s say that you don’t want your children to eat junk food. Instead of preaching and talking about what is it that you want (which in this case is to eat healthy), show them that junk food will hinder them to reach the gymnastic team because junk food creates too much fat in the body but living a healthy and happy life will help them to reach their goal.
This is very crucial when you want to influence people. Henry Ford said, “if there’s any one secret of success, it lies in the ability to get the other person’s point of view and see things from that person’s angle as well as from your own.”

So, if you want to catch a fish, and you know that fishes prefer worms than shrimps, you have to give it what it wants, to get what you want. This method works the same when you want to influence people.
Many times we fail to do this because we want to see things only from our perspective. But I want to encourage you today to make a shift and start seeing things from the other person’s lens. And you will see that in no time, you are influencing lives and charming people.
